HC Deb 21 March 1946 vol 420 c397W
5. Major C. Poole

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why Servicemen who have shown all the necessary qualifications of bravery, endurance and physical fitness in strenuous campaigns are considered unsuitable for enrolment in the N.F.S. because they do not attain a certain height; and if he will reconsider the regulations in such cases.

Mr. Ede

The decision to fix a minimum height standard of 5 ft. 7 in. for candidates without previous service in the National Fire Service was taken after careful consideration, and, as at present advised, I do not think it would be right to modify it. Provision is made for slight relaxation in the case of candidates with exceptional qualifications.
