HC Deb 21 March 1946 vol 420 c400W
Mr. Hurd

asked the Minister of Health the basic prices for the materials incorporated in houses costing up to 1,200; and if he will permit local authorities to issue supplementary licences on presentation of invoices showing higher prices paid for the more expensive commodities, such as clay tiles, wood blocks and coloured sanitary fittings, of which there are stocks in some districts that cannot now be used.

Mr. Bevan

The variety of materials is so wide that I do not think it would be practicable to give ruling prices. I am satisfied that the maximum selling price of £1,200 is generally sufficient to enable developers to build good houses with a choice of materials and equipment, and I have already authorised local authorities to increase this maximum where the cost of the land is unusually and unavoidably high.
