HC Deb 20 March 1946 vol 420 c359W
14. Major Wilkes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has any statement to make as to the state of local government in Mauritius; whether there is any democratic representation on local authorities; and whether it is proposed to reform the present municipal machinery.

Mr. Creech Jones

The Governor of Mauritius has sought advice on the system of local government in Mauritius from an officer recently there who has special knowledge of local government here. The Governor will no doubt consider the desirability of any reforms in the light of the expert advice he has received. At present democratic representation is confined to the capital, Port Louis.
