HC Deb 20 March 1946 vol 420 c365W
32. Mr. Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will propose an amendment to the Order in Council prolonging the life of the Ceylon legislature until March, 1947, in view of the many demands for an immediate general election.

Mr. Creech Jones

I am aware that requests have been made by a minority organisation in Ceylon for an early election, but the Ceylon State Council, including representatives of that minority, have accepted His Majesty's Government's proposals for a new constitution. I see no reason for the holding of a general election until the new constitution comes into force.
