asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies on what date did the Palestine Police last receive an increase in their salaries; and if any increase in pay is being considered at present.

The annual rates of pay of members of the Palestine Police Force were revised with effect from the 1st November, 1944, as follow:

British

Constable: £132 by annual increments of £8 to £180.

Second sergeant: £180 by annual increments of £8 to £204.

First sergeant: £204 by annual increments of £8 to £228.

Inspector: £300 by annual increments of £12 to £420.

In addition constables and sergeants receive free uniform, rations and accommodation. Inspectors an expatriation allowance of £100 a year.

Palestinian

Constable: £72 for two years then by annual increments of £6 to £96.

Corporal: £120 for two years then by annual increments of £6 to £138.

Sergeant: £144 for two years then by annual increments of £8 to £168.

Inspector: £180 for two years then by annual increments of £8 to £264.

With effect from the 1st April, 1946, the incremental rate for British constables was increased to £12 and an expatriation allowance granted to British constables and sergeants of £24 and £36 a year respectively. The incremental rate for Palestinian constables was also increased to £8.

In addition there is a temporary high cost of living allowance which in the case of a British constable on the minimum of the salary scale is at present £7 5s. a month.

Married members of the regular force up to and including the rank of inspector, if admitted to the married establishment, receive housing assistance by way of approved barrack, station or other accommodation and fuel, light and water, or an allowance in lieu. British police con- stables may also qualify for language allowances, proficiency and trade pay and Palestinian constables for proficiency, good conduct, and trade pay. No further revision of the rates of pay is at present under consideration.
