Mellorasked the Lord President of the Council whether he will include in the new charter to be granted to the B.B.C. a provision for the number of its governors to be increased to eight appointed by the Prime Minister, of whom two would retire every year, each appointment to be subject to affirmative resolutions of approval by Parliament.
§ Mr. H. MorrisonThe B.B.C. Charter already makes provision whereby the periods for which governors hold office can be staggered, as the hon. Member suggests, and their number increased or reduced by Order in Council. Their appointment is the prerogative of the Crown, and I am afraid that the Government cannot accept the suggestion that it should be subject to affirmative resolutions by Parliament.
