§ 140. Mr. J. Hudsonasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will remit the sentence of one month's imprisonment passed on 17th July, at Chesham, on Alfred James Holland, an 18-year-old member of the Society of Friends at Amersham, for his conscientious objection to serve in the Forces or to accept any alternative engagement as a condition of his release from such service.
§ Mr. EdeI understand that this man was fined £10 with the alternative of one month's imprisonment for failing to comply with the condition on which he was registered as a conscientious objector, namely, that he undertook agriculture, forestry, or land work. He had appealed unsuccessfully to the appellate tribunal against this condition. I can find no ground for recommending any interference with the decision of the court.
