asked the Minister of Works how many German and Italian prisoners of war were being Employed on the quarrying or manufacture of building materials on 31st July, 30th November and 31st January, respectively.

Mr. Tomlinson

The numbers of prisoners engaged on the manufacture of building materials were:

31st July 1,200
30th November 2,500
31st January 3.000

It is not possible to give separate figures for the quarrying of building materials. and other quarrying, but the numbers for quarrying generally were:

31st July 1,55O
30th November 1,800
31st January 1,720

asked the Minister of Works how many German and Italian prisoners of war were being employed on house-building, or the preparation of housing sites on 31st July, 30th November and 31st January respectively.

Mr. Tomlinson

Prisoners of war are by agreement with the trade unions employed on certain types of work only and this does not include skilled work on house building. For the preparation of housing sites, the figures are:
