HC Deb 26 February 1946 vol 419 cc368-9W
Mr. Challen

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will indicate what instructions have been issued with regard to the practice of retaining or dropping Service titles by those who held temporary commissions in the Fighting Services during the war.

Mr. Lawson

Generally speaking, the rule on this subject in all three Services is that substantive or war substantive rank may be retained or if higher acting or temporary rank has been held that it may be retained under certain circumstances as laid down in the respective orders of the three Services. It is left to the discretion of each individual to use any rank to which he may be entitled, or to drop it, as he wishes.
