§ Mr. T. WilliamsThe estimated quantities of meat produced on agricultural holdings from home-fed livestock in the United Kingdom in 1944–5 were as follows:
Tons. Beef and veal 505,000 Mutton and lamb 137,000 Pork, bacon, etc 124,000 The area of permanent and temporary grass used for grazing in the United Kingdom at 3rd June, 1944, was 11,356,000 acres. My hon. Friend will, of course, be aware that this meat was not produced solely from the grass mentioned, but also from grain and other fodder crops and purchased feeding stuffs. The total energy value of the meat would be about 2 to 2… million million calories.
