HC Deb 21 February 1946 vol 419 cc295-6W
Lieut.-Colonel Mackeson

asked the Minister of Education the total number of men and women teachers required during the next two years; what educational standards will be demanded from those selected as teachers; and what tests those selected will be asked to pass.

Miss Wilkinson:

My plans are based on an intake of about 25,000 new teachers into maintained and assisted primary and secondary schools during 1946 and 1947. This provides for only part of the addition required for raising, the school age to 15 as the full effect of that measure will not be felt until 1948. The great majority of teachers enter the profession after courses of education and training at universities or training colleges, and the test required of them Is the satisfactory completion of the course approved for them.
