HC Deb 21 February 1946 vol 419 cc287-9W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Labour as it was the policy of His Majesty's Government to obtain the maximum number of building trade trainee places six months after the cessation of hostilities in Europe, for how many accommodation in new and adapted premises is now ready; and what is the total number of those waiting to enter training centres for lack of accommodation.

Mr. Isaacs:

I do not accept the hon. Member's statement of the Government's policy. It. was never contemplated that it would be possible to develop the Building Training Scheme to its maximum in six months. Accommodation for building trainees has been increased by a thousand during the last month and is now available for about 5,500. New centres being opened in the course of the next three months will increase the available training places to some 12,000. The number on the waiting list on 8th February, was 8,428.
