HC Deb 21 February 1946 vol 419 c301W
Sir R. Glyn

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that in spite of the great shortage of accommodation at Abingdon in the county of Berkshire, especially for men returning home from the Services, the officer in charge of works, Royal Naval Air Service Station, Culham, is still demanding billets through the billeting officer of the borough of Abingdon, although the contractor engaged on work for the airfield should be made responsible for housing his own workers or empty accommodation belonging to the R.A.F. at adjacent airfields could be used for this purpose; and whether he will arrange for an inquiry to be held on the spot.

Mr. Alexander:

The Officer-in-Charge of Works at the Royal Naval Air Station, Culham, has made only one request during recent months for a billet in Abingdon. This was in respect of an Admiralty Foreman of Works who had been transferred from Rosyth to replace a man leaving the district. The total number of contractors' workpeople now billeted in Abingdon is four, but it is expected that these will be leaving within a few weeks. In these circumstances, I do not think that a special inquiry on the spot is necessary.
