HC Deb 14 February 1946 vol 419 cc147-8W
Sir E. Graham-Little

asked the Minister of Education whether Servicemen and women wishing to enter the emergency service for training teachers enjoy any priority of selection; whether they are informed of these arrangements in advance of demobilisation; and what proportion of Servicemen and women have so far been admitted to training.

Miss Wilkinson

Men and women demobilised or about to be demobilised from H.M. Forces are given priority over civilians in the arrangements made for interviewing candidates for the emergency scheme for the training of teachers. Every endeavour is made to inform them of the result of their applications before demobilisation, but this is not always possible. Of the candidates so far admitted to training, 36 per cent. of the men and 2.6 per cent. of the women have been identified as Service applicants, but in this respect the records readily available are not complete and the actual proportions are certainly larger.
