§ Sir W. Smithersasked the Minister of Fuel and Power what is the position at Clifton Colliery, Nottingham.
§ Mr. ShinwellThis colliery was taken over by the Government in November, 1942. Saleable output, which was 135,927 tons in 1941 and 146,144 tons in 1942, has risen to 198,618 in 1945. The output per manshift in 1945 also showed an improvement on the 1942 figures. The financial results have steadily improved. Following the Christmas holidays this colliery, in common with the rest of the industry, suffered some increase in absenteeism. I am confident that this is an incidental occurrence and that the improvement will continue.
