§ Mr. Warbeyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what representations he has made to the Portuguese Government with a view to ensuring that German assets in Portugal shall be available for reparations and that the gold looted by the Germans, which is at present in Portugal, shall be restored; and what the result of these representations has been.
Mr. McNeilFormal negotiations between the Portuguese Government and the Governments of Great Britain, France and the United States on the subject of German assets and of gold looted by the Germans at present in Portugal were opened as long ago as 3rd September last and are still in progress. I regret to say that, contrary to my expectations, it has not yet been possible to conclude an agreement with Portugal on the lines of the recent agreements with Sweden and Switzerland.
