HC Deb 09 December 1946 vol 431 cc182-3W
Mr. Janner

asked the Prime Minister whether in connection with the rebuilding of the House of Commons, consideration can be given to installing some plaque in memory of the late President Roosevelt in order to commemorate the deep regard which Members of the British Parliament had for him.

The Prime Minister

Successive Governments have for many years followed the general rule that no Memorial should be erected in the Palace of Westminster to any individual within 10 years of his decease except in accordance with the resolution of both Houses of Parliament. Even if such a resolution were passed, having regard to the time necessary to complete the new building scheme it would not be possible to show the tablet for some years. The House will be glad to know, however, that I am in communication with the Dean of Westminster with a view to setting up a tablet in memory of the late President Roosevelt in a suitable position in the Abbey.
