HC Deb 04 December 1946 vol 431 cc89-90W
87. Mr. T. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what Governments are to meet the cost of war damage to property in non-self-governing parts of the British Empire.

Mr. Creech Jones

In Malta and Ceylon the cost of war damage to property is to be met from war damage funds provided under contributory insurance schemes. In Malta where the resources of the community are wholly inadequate to meet the damage, His Majesty's Government have undertaken to assist the Government of Malta by a Grant from the Exchequer. Aden and Kenya will meet the cost from their own funds. In other Colonial territories assessments of damage have been or will be made but until the extent of the damage is known it will not be possible to say how far the Government concerned will be able to meet the full cost.
