HC Deb 04 December 1946 vol 431 c96W
97. Major Bramall

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty why a credit in Latin in School. Certificate is considered a necessary qualification for a commission in the electrical branch of the R.N.

Mr. Dugdale

The scheme of training of Naval electrical officers includes for the present a three year course at Cambridge University where the officers read for the Mechanical Sciences Tripos. This knowledge of Latin is necessary in order to meet the University regulations of admission. Although the requirement of the University in this respect is of general application, I will discuss the matter further with the Cambridge University authorities.
