Commander Galbraithasked the Assistant Postmaster-General, in the light of the statement of the Financial Secretary to the Treasury in the House of Commons, on 5th November, 1946, that the Post Office cost £2 per head of the population of the United Kingdom between 20 and 60 years of age in 1938 and the same figure in 1945, if he will give a detailed statement showing how the profit from the increase of the 1½d. letter to 2½d. was spent in 1945.
§ Mr. BurkeThe figures given by my hon. Friend on 5th November covered a part only of the Post Office costs. The rounded per head figures given also obscure a substantial increase in that part of Post Office costs covered by the Question. An attempt to relate the revenue from one item of business to personnel costs only would be an unprofitable exercise.
