118. Mr. Shawcross

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he is aware that the local fuel overseer of the Whiston rural district, purporting to be acting on behalf of his Department, has given instructions to local merchants prohibiting them from supplying rationed fuel to squatters occupying the Higher Road Camp, Halebank, near Widnes; and under what statutory authority such instructions are authorised.

It is the policy of the Government to withhold facilities such as gas, electricity and coal from squatters who continue to occupy camps required for the use of Services and other Government Departments. This camp was required for agricultural training purposes and the local fuel overseer acted in accordance with the general instructions covering such cases. I now understand that
