HC Deb 02 December 1946 vol 431 c17W
109. Major Lloyd

asked the Under-secretary of State for Burma the cost of the United Kingdom publicity office to be opened in Rangoon; whether he is aware that its functions could be as effectively and cheaply discharged by the British Consul; and how many people in Burma are estimated to require an exposition of the social, economic and political developments in this country.

Mr. A. Henderson

I am satisfied that there is no other authority in Burma to whom the functions in question could appropriately be entrusted: those of the representative of the British Council are restricted to the exposition of Britain in terms of culture and education. The United Kingdom Information Officer, who only recently left for Burma, will submit detailed estimates of expenditure for approval as soon as possible.
