asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to what commodities the cost-of-living subsidies are applied; and the amount by which each commodity has been so subsidised during the most recent convenient accounting period.

Mr. Dalton:

The commodities affected by the cost-of-living subsidies, and the approximate cost in the financial year 1945–46, are shown in the following table. Before 1st September, 1945, no loss was incurred on Lend-Lease foodstuffs.
