asked the Minister of Transport to what extent he is using his powers under the Coast Protection Act, 1939, to prevent coast erosion

Mr. Barnes:

The Act to which the hon. Member refers empowers me to prohibit, restrict or impose conditions as to the removal of materials forming part of the seashore when this is considered desirable for the protection of the coast from erosion or for the prevention of damage to lands by the action of the sea. When complaints or reports are received that erosion is being caused by the removal of materials from the shore, the question of making an Order under the Act is carefully considered. So far two Orders have been made, but in addition some 50 Orders which were made before the passing of that Act are now deemed to be Orders for all purposes of the Act
