asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why a travel permit is still necessary for British subjects wishing to proceed to Northern Ireland.

Mr. Ede:

It is necessary. for British subjects normally resident in Great Britain or Northern Ireland to carry a travel identity card so that they may be distinguishable at the ports from aliens and from citizens of Eire whose entry has still to be controlled.
