asked the President of the Board of trade if he is aware that the extension of electric cables into rural areas throughout the country is being held up by the shortage of poles; and what step, he is taking to import a larger quantity of poles from Scandinavia to meet the requirements of the electrical supply industry.

Mr. Belcher:

Yes, Sir. As many poles will be imported as can be obtained without prejudice to urgent requirements of pitprops, but I am afraid the position is likely to remain tight.
