HC Deb 02 April 1946 vol 421 cc158-9W
106. Sir R. Glyn

asked the Minister of Works the estimated labour force and quantity of materials required for hutting and other preparations for the Victory Parade on 8th June; what is the estimated cost; and under what Vote will such expenditure fall.

Mr. Tomlinson:

The principal materials required by my Department for the Victory Parade on 8th June are steel scaffolding, rough timber decking, iron pipes, masts, flag poles, hessian and Elsan closets. In addition the War Office, who are erecting camps in Kensington Gardens and Regents Park, will use surplus tents and administration, ablution and washing units from redundant stocks. Until quantities are taken out it is not possible to give exact details of the materials required, but a large proportion will be available for re-use.

The labour force required by the Ministry of Works will amount to 560 men for eight weeks, and by the War Office 500 men, including a number of prisoners of war, for six weeks.

The total cost of all Civil Expenditure on the Victory Celebrations is provisionally estimated at £135,000. The expenditure by the War Office on the camps is placed at £33,000. A supplementary estimate under Class VII of the Civil Estimates will be submitted to Parliament in due course. Expenditure by the Service Departments will fall upon their ordinary votes.
