HC Deb 02 April 1946 vol 421 c142W
12. Sir T. Moore

asked the Secretary of State for War how many British horses and mules employed in the service of the Armed Forces are still in Egypt and North Africa; how many such animals have been disposed of; and in what manner this was done.

Mr. Lawson:

On 12th March 1,417 British horses from this country were still in the Mediterranean area, of which 1,250 were in Egypt and Palestine and none in North Africa. Separate figures for Egypt and Palestine are not available. Six thousand, three hundred and forty-nine have been disposed of. All of them either died or were humanely destroyed. No British mules have been sent overseas since the beginning of the war.
