Foxasked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, in view of the large number of aircraft carriers now no longer necessary for war purposes, he will make arrangements for their immediate partial conversion into troop carriers, so as to hasten the transport of Servicemen due for demobilisation, indicating the number of ships to be so used; and if he will investigate the great success of such a policy now being carried out in the U.S. Navy.
§ Mr. J. DugdaleYes, Sir. Arrangements have already been made with this end in view. Seven Aircraft Carriers have been allocated for this purpose, six after conversion and one without conversion. They will be brought into service from the middle of next month onwards. Aircraft carriers have also been used extensively in the Far East for the evacuation of ex-prisoners of war.
