HL Deb 23 October 1945 vol 137 c446WA
LORD GRANTLEY

asked His Majesty's Government why only two promotions to the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force have been made since the outbreak of war, in view of the fact that four Admirals of the Fleet have been created and nine Field Marshals, in the latter case many of them supernumerary to establishment, and especially in view of the superb leadership of the very highest officers of the Royal Air Force.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR AIR (VISCOUNT STANSGATE)

I must apologize for the time which has elapsed since the noble Lord put down this question, during which a new promotion has been made to the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force. The number of promotions to this rank is not related to that of corresponding promotions in the other Services, but solely to the requirements of the Royal Air Force.

House adjourned at eighteen minutes before five o'clock.
