§ Mr. LawsonI am not aware of the complaints to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers. The first and essential qualification for an interpreter is the ability to speak a foreign language. From applicants who fulfil this requirement selection is made on grounds of personal suitability and linguistic qualifications. Personal suitability is assessed on character and general bearing and not on political sympathies or affiliations.
