§ Mr. Jenningsasked the Prime Minister if he will give an undertaking to the House that the Government will not 1832W attempt to nationalise the steel industry until the Government's policy in relation to the coal industry has had time to show results.
§ The Prime MinisterIt has already been announced that the nationalisation of the iron and steel industry is not on the Government's programme of legislation for the present Session. I can certainly give no other undertaking on the subject.
§ Sir G. Foxasked the Minister of Supply and of Aircraft Production whether he is aware of the anxiety in various branches of the iron and steel industry such as the pressed steel industry as to whether they are to be brought within the prospective nationalisation scheme; and whether, in view of the importance of reviving the motor-car industry and other industries dependent on iron and steel, he can make a statement forthwith to prevent further uncertainty.
§ Mr. WilmotAs stated in reply to a Question by the hon. Member for Hallam (Mr. Jennings) on 17th October, no legislation for the nationalisation of the steel industry will be introduced this Session. I am in close touch with the industry and am not aware that anxiety as to the future is impeding its efforts to improve its efficiency and meet the demands of its customers.
