HC Deb 09 October 1945 vol 414 c84W
Colonel Thornton-Kemsley

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he can give a report on the progress of harvest operations in Scotland, with details by counties of any reported shortage of labour; and what steps have been taken to remedy this.

Mr. T. Fraser

I am glad to say that excellent progress has been made with the in-gathering of the Scottish grain harvest and that a good start has been made with potato lifting. The labour position generally has been highly satisfactory. In a few districts in central and southern Scotland some shortage was reported at the end of September, but the difficulties have since been overcome with the aid of military and prisoner of war labour.
