HC Deb 09 October 1945 vol 414 c97W
Mr. Studholme

asked the Minister of Labour what steps he is taking to encourage boys to become blacksmiths' apprentices.

Mr. Isaacs

Arrangements for the establishment of an Apprenticeship Scheme for the Farriery and Blacksmiths' Trade are nearly complete. After consultation between the Joint Industrial Council for the Farriery and Blacksmiths' Trade, the Government Departments concerned and other interested bodies, it has been decided to adopt a standard form of indenture, five years' apprenticeship, a national system of registration of apprentices, the provision of the appropriate theoretical and practical training and the award of a Certificate of competency on completion of apprenticeship. I am also arranging for the preparation and issue of a special leaflet describing the facilities of this scheme.
