Foxasked the Minister of War Transport how many toll bridges have been freed since the powers of compulsory purchase were given in the Road Traffic Act, 1930; how many still remain to be freed; what are his plans for expediting the freeing of all remaining toll bridges in the country; and what arrangements in particular are being made about the freeing of Whitchurch toll bridge.
§ Mr. BarnesSince the Road Traffic Act, 1930, came into operation 33 toll bridges have been freed. Fifty-nine toll bridges remain, and' I am prepared to consider for grant any application from a highway authority which has as its object the freeing of a toll bridge. As far as Whitchurch toll bridge is concerned a letter was sent to the Berkshire County Council on 28th February, 1945, asking for certain information and I await a reply.
