HC Deb 26 November 1945 vol 416 c1027W
Commander C. Shawcross

asked the President of the Board of Trade what steps he is proposing to take, by the introduction of new industries or otherwise, to secure full employment in the borough of Widnes, the county borough of St. Helens and generally in South Lancashire.

Sir S. Cripps

My hon. and gallant Friend will be aware that a number of important Government owned factories were built in the South Lancashire area during the war. We are taking active steps to allocate these factories to provide employment in the district. In addition, South Lancashire is one of the areas in which we are granting immediate facilities for new factory construction, and by the end of October, 1945, six new schemes, including one involving an expenditure of£222,000, had been approved.
