HC Deb 26 November 1945 vol 416 cc1029-30W
Wing-Commander Robinson

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that producers of cosmetics for export arc having to refuse orders owing to their inability to obtain glass jars and that, as a result, these markets arc being lost to American competition; and whether he will permit the glass manufacturers to release sufficient glass jars to the manufacturers of cosmetics to enable them to retain their overseas markets.

Sir S. Cripps

Yes, Sir. As I informed the hon. and gallant Member for Bucklow (Lieutenant W. Shepherd) on 19th November, everything possible is being done to increase the labour force in the glass bottle industry so that more containers can be made available for export industries and other essential purposes.

There is no restriction on the manufacture and supply of glass containers but manufacturers have to meet heavy demands for bottles required for food, drink and medicines.
