HC Deb 20 November 1945 vol 416 c400W
Dr. Little

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power the amount of petrol exported to Eire by this country or shipped there by his authority in August, September and October, respectively.

Mr. Shinwell

imports vary from month to month according to the shipping programme. During the three months period August-October authorised shipments totalled just over 12,000 tons, or rather less than the current rate of consumption.

Mr. Turner-Samuels

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power the quantity of petrol imported from the sterling area for the months of August, September and October 1945, respectively; and how much of this was allocated to commercial needs, basic petrol rations and military needs, respectively.

Mr. Shinwell

From estimates which are available to my Department it can be reckoned that about 90,000 tons of motor spirit reached this country from British-controlled sources during the months of August, September and October. Imports of motor spirit are not allocated according to the source of supply and in any event the quantity I have mentioned is not sufficient for any one of the three categories of needs to which my hon. Friend refers.
