HC Deb 20 November 1945 vol 416 cc397-8W
Mr. E. L. Gandar Dower

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Civil Aviation whether he will arrange for a wireless station for civil aircraft to be established at Wick aerodrome; and whether he is aware that since 1940 an air line has been operating from Aberdeen to Wick without such assistance.

Mr. Ivor Thomas

The provision of a wireless station for civil aircraft at Wick and at other places depends solely on operational and traffic considerations. The network of air services to be operated within the United Kingdom is at present under consideration and until this has been settled decisions on details of the associated radio facilities cannot be taken. I am aware that, since 1940, an airline has been operating to Wick without such assistance.

Mr. Gandar Dower

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Civil Aviation whether he is aware that passengers embarking and disembarking at Wick are obliged to wait on the perimeter of the aerodrome and walk 300 yards through uncut grass to reach the aeroplane; and whether, in view of the approaching

winter, he will make arrangements permitting them to be driven through the main entrance and for civil air lines to be granted proper accommodation.

Mr. Ivor Thomas

I am aware of the inconvenience to which passengers using Wick airfield have been subject. My Department is already discussing with the Air Ministry how civil air line accommodation requirements can best be met without prejudice to the operational efficiency of the station. We are agreed with the Air Ministry that a solution to the problem can most satisfactorily be sought on the site and arrangements are being made for local discussions between representatives of the Air Ministry and the operating company.
