§ Sir G. Foxasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will state the number of police constables who have passed examinations for sergeant's rank and who at present have not been promoted; the number likely to get promotion; and the number likely to remain as police constables for the rest of their service.
§ Mr. EdeOn 21st November, 1944, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 14,450 constables in England and Wales who had passed the examinations for promotion to the rank of sergeant. It is impossible to assess individual chances in a way that would enable me to answer the remainder of the question.
