HC Deb 14 November 1945 vol 415 cc2283-4W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether His Majesty's Government will attach as a condition to any future grants made by this country to U.N.R.R.A., that such funds shall only benefit a country Which gives Press correspondents full access to normal news sources and which does not censor Press reports.

Mr. Bevin

Under the Resolutions adopted by the Council of U.N.R.R.A., the Administration have the right to send their own supervising agents into the territory of any country which is receiving U.N.R.R.A. supplies. These agents are entitled to satisfy themselves that the distribution is fairly and equitably carried out, and I have no doubt that this machinery has worked well, and is sufficient to fulfil the purpose which the hon. Member has in mind.
