HC Deb 14 November 1945 vol 415 c2278W
Lady Noel-Buxton

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what measures are being taken to prevent the spread of silicosis in the copper mines of Northern Rhodesia.

Mr. George Hall

The presence of silicosis in some mines in Northern Rhodesia was established as the result of an inquiry by medical experts in 1943. In that year a committee was set up to examine and advise on certain aspects of the problem. As a result of the committee's recommendations the Silicosis (Temporary Arrangement) Ordinance has been passed and provides for the establishment of a silicosis bureau, the regular medical inspection of miners, the payment of compensation to miners who have contracted the disease in the Northern Rhodesia mines and the cessation in certain circumstances of work as miners by workers who contact the disease.
