HL Deb 14 November 1945 vol 137 c956WA
THE EARL OF BREADALBANE ANDHOLLAND

asked His Majesty's Govern-merit whether it is a fact that officers and men invalided to civilian life direct from hospitals are given clothing coupons instead of a civilian outfit in kind; but as these only carry civilian priority the individuals concerned frequently find them practically valueless on presentation to shops in the case of articles in short supply, such as footwear; if so, whether they will consider giving these coupons Service priority in the case of an initial outfit.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (LORD NATHAN)

Officers and men who return to civil life direct from hospitals are given the usual civilian outfit in kind. An exception, however, is made in favour of those who are bedridden, either permanently or suffering from a disability likely to continue for more than twelve months; they receive a cash allowance and coupons in place of the outfit. This arrangement is designed for their benefit but if any officer or soldier concerned prefers the outfit at the time of his release, it can be issued to him.

House adjourned at seven o'clock.
