§ VISCOUNT SAMUELasked His Majesty's Government whether they will state what were the total casualties suffered in the United Kingdom, during the period of the war with Germany, in killed, in wounded or seriously injured, and the total:
- (a) in the Armed Forces;
- (b) in the civil population through enemy action;
- (c) through accidents on the roads
§ LORD TEMPLEMOREThe total casualties suffered by the Army and Auxiliary Territorial and Nursing Services in the United Kingdom during the period of the war with Germany were 16,363. Of this total 11,410 were killed, and 4,953 were seriously injured as a result of enemy action. I regret that corresponding figures are not available for the other two Services. The total casualties suffered by the civil population as a result of enemy action during the period of the war with Germany were 60,585 killed, and 86,175 injured and detained in hospital. From September, 1939, to April, 1945, inclusive, 42,556 persons were killed on the roads. The reporting of injuries was discontinued from September, 1939, to March, 1941, inclusive, but from April, 1941, to April, 1945, inclusive, 562,000 persons sustained injury due to road accidents.
