§ THE DUKE OF SUTHERLANDasked His Majesty's Government whether the large number of part-worn tyres on disused 514WA and scrapped military cars that are to be seen parked in various heaths and woods of the countryside, especially in Surrey, could not be made available for some useful purpose—military or civil—owing to the great shortage of rubber.
§ LORD CROFTThe Ministry of Supply made arrangements some time ago whereby unserviceable vehicles are reconditioned, where this is possible, and then either returned to the Services for further use or disposed of to civilian licence holders for the maintenance of essential services, or retained for supply to the Continent. If the vehicles are unsuitable for reconditioning they are broken up and their serviceable components, such as tyres, are retained for further use, either in the Services or for civilian needs in this country or in liberated countries. Until it has, been decided what to do with a given lorry it is kept on its tyres. It can then be moved and finally disposed of more easily.
