asked the Minister of Education how many pupils are at present assigned to the elementary and secondary schools, respectively, in England and Wales; and how many university graduate teachers are employed in each of these categories.

On 31st March, 1938, the latest date for which figures are available, the number of pupils on the registers of public elementary schools in England and Wales was 5,039,321 and of grant-aided secondary schools, 470,003; on the same date the number of graduate teachers in public elementary schools was 11,865 and in grant-aided secondary schools 19,624.
