HC Deb 17 December 1945 vol 417 c1076W
Miss Colman

asked the Secretary of State for War whether in view of the hardship likely to result from a business remaining closed for a considerable time after the end of the war, he will reconsider the decision not to recommend compassionate release to reopen a business which was closed when the owner was called up.

Mr. Bellenger

This type of case has been specially considered, during the present month, by all the Departments concerned, in consultation, and it was decided that there were insufficient grounds to include it among the categories entitling Servicemen to be considered for compassionate release. The effect of introducing new categories must be either to prejudice the release of others with prior claims or to cause an embarrassing increase in the total of compassionate releases, which are only one factor in the Release Scheme.
