HC Deb 12 December 1945 vol 417 cc577-8W
Mr. Spearman

asked the Minister of Food whether he will take steps to see that weighing machines are available at all markets where grading of livestock takes place.

Sir B. Smith

Weighing machines are available for use in or near all markets where grading of cattle takes place. Occasionally as at the Bridlington Market a machine may break down and in such a case special temporary arrangements have to be made for the grading of cattle pending repairs or the installation of a new machine. There are a small number of markets at which only sheep are graded at which there are no weighing machines. Although weighing machines are not essential for the grading of sheep, every encouragement is given to the weighing of sheep where machines are available to assist graders in estimating the carcase weights. I have not however considered it essential to insist on the installation of a machine by every owner of a market where sheep are graded.
