HC Deb 11 December 1945 vol 417 cc362-3W
Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the delay in obtaining repairs to ophthalmic optical appliances is now extended to five months in many parts of the country, thus causing great inconvenience to those whose work is handicapped by bad eyesight; that one firm making such appliances and employing 300 men recently had 59 of them called up; and whether, in these circumstances, he will take steps either to limit the call-up of men from the optical industry or to take such other steps as are necessary to provide the industry with no less labour than it has had during recent years.

Mr. Isaacs

My Department, in consultation with other Departments concerned, is looking into this question to see whether any further action can be taken to improve the labour supply position. As regards call-up, I should be glad to look into the case mentioned if my hon. Friend will give me the name of the undertaking to which he refers.
