HL Deb 24 August 1945 vol 137 cc189-90WA
VISCOUNT BLEDISLOE

asked His Majesty's Government, whether in view of the serious prospective shortage of essential foods, the relative exhaustion of much of Britain's farm land, the shortage of farm labour and of fertilizers and the enormous importance of creating a feeling of confidence among farmers and farm workers regarding the future of British agriculture, if the maximum food output is to be secured from the soil of this country, they will make known forthwith, prior to autumn cultivations and sowings, what is their long-term agricultural policy.

THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY OF THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES (THE EARL OF HUNTINGDON)

Cropping policy, and the prices of the principal farm products, have already been determined for the year 1945–46 covering the crops to be sown in the coming autumn. The Government's general objective with regard to agriculture was broadly indicated in the gracious Speech from the Throne, and this will be elaborated in due course.
